I really like how motivated I got during my 60 day Bikram challenge and how well I did, so I decided it’s time for another challenge. I’m great at getting myself to do yoga or go to the gym, but I’ve always had trouble sticking to my diet and not cheating and eating junk. This time around I’m gonna challenge my diet!
I’ve been thinking about switching to a Paleo diet for some time now. What exactly is a Paleo diet? It’s a diet structured on the presumed diet of the Paleolithic era that ended 10,000 years ago with the rise of agriculture. Centered on commonly available modern foods, the “contemporary” Paleolithic diet consists mainly of fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruit, roots, and nuts, and excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.
I eat “real” food – fresh, natural food like meat, vegetables and fruit. I choose foods that are nutrient dense, with lots of naturally-occurring vitamins and minerals, over foods that have more calories but less nutrition. And food quality is important – I’m careful about where my meat comes from, and buy produce locally and organically as often as possible.
It’s not a low calorie “diet” – I eat as much as I need to maintain strength, energy and a healthy weight. In fact, my diet is probably much higher in fat than you’d imagine. Fat isn’t the enemy – it’s agreatenergy source when it comes from high quality foods like avocado, coconut and nuts. And I’m not trying to do a “low carb” thing, but since I’m eating vegetables and fruits instead of bread, cereal and pasta, it just happens to work out that way.
Eating like this is good for maintaining a healthy metabolism, and reducing inflammation within the body. It’s been doing great things for my energy levels, body composition and performance in the gym. It also helps to minimize my risk for a whole host of lifestyle diseases and conditions, like diabetes, heart attack and stroke.
So why did I decide to go for a Paleo diet rather than your average healthy balanced diet of clean eating? It just doesn’t work for me. For months and months, on and off again, I have struggled with calorie counting and macro balancing, and I have not lost a pound. Last year I followed a ketogenic diet for 9 months and gave up because I kept cheating. But I found that when I stuck to the diet I lost weight, and I also felt better. I didn’t have to take medication for my depression nor my ADHD, and that’s AMAZING! Amphetamines are not something I desire to take for the rest of my life. However, I found that keto was not sustainable for me in the long run and struggling to stay under 20g of carbs a day caused me too much stress on top of the load of stress I was already dealing with. Paleo isn’t as hardcore about carb counting, and fruit is allowed- not something I eat often, but when a craving hits hard I feel it’s much better to have some low glycemic fruit like berries rather than toughing it out (and for me, subsequently cheating!). Through my trials and tribulations finding the right diet for me, I’ve also discovered that I am sensitive to gluten and dairy- the fact that Paleo excludes these makes it a no-brainer for me to try.
So on June 1st I’m starting the Whole30 Challenge- 30 whole days of eating Paleo. I’ll update with another post outlining exactly what the challenge is, and I’m excited to get started! Each day I’ll update with my intake and perhaps a picture or two of my meals. I’m hoping this challenge will be as much fun as my last- who doesn’t love a good challenge?
In the meantime, you can find out more about the Paleo diet here and here, and the Whole30 here!
